Those responsible for the despicable act of booby-trapping and bombing civilian homes in Raddaa must be brought to justice, and it is imperative to provide compensation for the victims' losses.
Mwatana for Human Rights has implored the Attorney General in Sana'a to launch an immediate criminal investigation into the deaths of 15 civilians, predominantly women and children, and the injuries sustained by approximately 30 others, including women and children, in the city of Raddaa, situated in the Al-Bayda Governorate of southeast Yemen. This incident occurred when security forces associated with the Ansar Allah (Houthi) group rigged a residential building with highly explosive devices, detonating it at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. As a result, not only was the targeted house obliterated, but six neighboring residences were also destroyed, leading to casualties among their inhabitants and extensive damage to numerous other homes.
Mwatana for Human Rights underscored that the persistent and egregious violations against civilians stem from a culture of impunity, wherein perpetrators evade accountability, and victims remain uncompensated for the multitude of offenses committed over the years. The only effective means to prevent the recurrence of such atrocious violations is to urgently dismantle the system of impunity. Mwatana advocates for the prosecution of all individuals involved in this heinous crime, along with those who bear responsibility for it, ensuring compensation for the victims, and facilitating medical care for the wounded and injured.
