Release of 103 Individuals During the First Quarter of 2024
Mwatana for Human Rights stated that it, through its field lawyers, offered legal support to 468 victims of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and torture, resulting in the release of 103 of them during the first quarter of 2024.
Radhya Al-Mutawakel, Chairperson of Mwatana for Human Rights, stated that the organization [Mwatana] provided legal support through its field lawyers to civilian victims during the first quarter of 2024. This includes 212 victims detained by the Ansar Allah (Houthi) group, 118 victims detained by the Southern Transitional Council, 109 victims detained by the Internationally Recognized Government forces, 25 victims detained by the Saudi/UAE-led coalition forces, and 2 victims detained by non-authoritative entities. These victims are distributed across various governorates in varying numbers as follows: 85 victims in Al-Dhale, 66 victims in Amanat Al-Asemah, 52 victims in Taiz, 50 victims in Hadramout, 39 victims in Aden, 31 victims in Hajjah, 19 victims in Al-Hudaydah, 27 victims in Lahj, 25 victims in Marib, 12 victims in Al-Mahra, 6 victims in Abyan, 11 victims in Al-Bayda, 10 victims in Shabwah, 11 victims in Ibb, 2 victims in Al-Mahwit, 6 victims in Saudi border territories, 4 victims in Amran, 5 victims in Dhamar, and 3 victims in Saada.
The Chairperson of Mwatana added, "Despite the undeclared ceasefire and cessation of airstrikes and ground attacks, various parties to the conflict continue to commit violations including arbitrary detention, forced disappearances, and torture against Yemeni civilians. In the first quarter of 2024, Mwatana documented through its field lawyers 219 cases of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, and torture. The Ansar Allah (Houthi) group is responsible for 66 cases of arbitrary detention, 21 cases of enforced disappearance, and 16 cases of torture. The Southern Transitional Council bears responsibility for 27 cases of arbitrary detention, 14 cases of enforced disappearance, and 7 cases of torture. The internationally recognized Yemeni government is responsible for 27 cases of arbitrary detention, 22 cases of enforced disappearance, and 15 cases of torture, while the Saudi/UAE-led coalition bears responsibility for one case of arbitrary detention and one case of enforced disappearance. Non-authoritative individuals are responsible for one case of arbitrary detention and one case of enforced disappearance."
