In 2020, Mwatana Contributed to the Release of 426 Detainees
Mwatana for Human Rights said that the organization's lawyers, in 19 Yemeni provinces, contributed to the release of 426 detainees during the period from January to December, 2020.
A source in the Legal Support Unit of Mwatana explained that the released detainees were distributed in various degrees between the 19 provinces, with the governorate of Aden leading with 55 released detainees, followed by Taiz with 40 released, then Dhamar with 35, Lahj 31, Abyan 30, then Al-Bayda, and Marib, with 28 detainees each.
Furthermore, the source indicated that Mwatana has also contributed to the release of other detainees, in other provinces. In Amanat Al-Asimah (Capital Trust) 24 detainees have been released, followed by Al-Hodeidah, with 23 detainees released, Al-Mahweet, 19 detainees , Hajjah (15 detainees), Raymah (19). Amran (13), Sana’a governorate (16), Sa’ada (one detainee), Shabwa (11 detainees), Hadramout (8 detainees), Al-Dhalea (21) and finally Ibb governorate where 9 detainees were released.
Mwatana for Human Rights provides legal support to victims of arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance of individuals detained by various parties. This support is provided through a network of female and male lawyers in various regions of Yemen where the organization operates alongside the families of the victims, or on their behalf, after carefully documenting of all the information related to the victim and the incident, based on informed consents of victims' families.
The efforts of Mwatana's legal support team focus on ensuring procedural justice for all individuals, who come into contact with the law, in an effort to ensure that they enjoy all the rights from the moment of detention, through the moment of investigation and defense, the place and conditions of arrest, and concluding with the trial.
