Contributing to the Release of 45 Victims in September 2024
Mwatana for Human Rights announced that it provided legal assistance through its field lawyers to 446 victims of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, torture, and extrajudicial killing. The organization also played a key role in securing the release of 45 individuals during September 2024.
Radhya Al-Mutawakel, Chairperson of Mwatana for Human Rights, stated that the organization offered legal support to civilian victims in May 2024 through its field lawyers, representing the following groups: 207 victims held by Ansar Allah (the Houthis), 103 victims under the Southern Transitional Council, 114 victims held by internationally recognized government forces, and 22 victims under the Saudi-Emirati-led coalition forces. These victims were spread across various governorates, with the highest numbers recorded in Dhaleh (72 victims), followed by Taiz (61 victims), Hadhramaut (52 victims), and Aden (46 victims). Other governorates include the Capital Secretariat (44 victims), Marib (30 victims), Hajjah (27 victims), Al-Bayda (18 victims), Lahj (15 victims), Ibb (14 victims), Shabwa (14 victims), Al Hudaydah (13 victims), Dhamar (10 victims), Amran (8 victims), Al-Mahwit (5 victims), Al-Mahrah (4 victims), Abyan (3 victims), Sana’a (3 victims), the Yemeni-Saudi border (3 victims), Sa’ada (2 victims), Al-Jawf (1 victim), and Rima (1 victim).
In September alone, Mwatana for Human Rights documented 75 new incidents of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and torture. Ansar Allah (the Houthis) were responsible for 42 of these incidents, internationally recognized government forces were responsible for 32 incidents, and the Southern Transitional Council forces were responsible for 10 incidents.
noting that September witnessed a wave of arbitrary arrests carried out by the Ansar Allah group (Houthi) against the backdrop of preparations to celebrate the 62nd anniversary of the September 26th Revolution, or calls for such celebrations. The month also saw the Ansar Allah group's (Houthi) persistence in suppressing civilians and restricting their spaces for expression and peaceful assembly, which reflects the group's arbitrary behavior in dealing with civilians.
