Contributing to the Release of 22 Victims in June 2024
Mwatana for Human Rights has announced that it provided legal support through its field lawyers to 426 victims of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, torture, and killing, contributing to the release of 22 of them in June 2024.
Radhya Al-Mutawakel, Chairperson of Mwatana for Human Rights, stated that the organization provided legal support to civilian victims through its field lawyers during June 2024. This support was extended to 190 victims held by the Ansar Allah (Houthi) group, 111 victims by the Southern Transitional Council, 100 victims by the internationally recognized government forces, 21 victims by the Saudi/UAE-led coalition forces,3 victims by the Joint Forces on the western coast, and one victim by individuals without authority. The victims are distributed across various governorates, with the highest numbers in Al-Dhale: 67 victims, followed by Taiz: 53 victims, Hadramaut: 51 victims, Amanat Al-Asimah: 47 victims, Aden: 45 victims, Hajjah: 27 victims, Lahj: 22 victims, Ma’rib: 22 victims, Al-Bayda: 19 victims, and Al-Hudaydah: 15. In June 2024 alone, Mwatana for Human Rights documented 70 new incidents of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and torture. The Ansar Allah (Houthi) group is responsible for 40 incidents, the Southern Transitional Council for 12 incidents, the internationally recognized government forces for 12 incidents, and the Joint Forces on the western coast for 6 incidents.
Mwatana highlighted that June 2024 witnessed a campaign of arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance by the Ansar Allah (Houthi) group against several Yemenis working in international humanitarian organizations, civil society organizations, and diplomatic missions. This made June the darkest month for civic space in the first half of 2024. Mwatana emphasized that its lawyers continue to provide legal support to victims of enforced disappearance and arbitrary detention, including those working in local and international organizations and diplomatic missions.
