Mwatana Provides Legal Support to 472 Victims of Arbitrary Detention, Enforced Disappearance, and Torture

Mwatana for Human Rights announced that it has provided legal support through its field lawyers to 472 victims of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and torture, contributing to the release of 38 of them in July 2024.

Radhya Al-Mutawakel, Chairperson of Mwatana for Human Rights, stated that the organization offered legal support to civilian victims in July 2024. These victims were held by various parties, including 211 victims by Ansar Allah (Houthi) group, 117 by the Southern Transitional Council, 118 by the internationally recognized government forces, 22 by the Saudi/UAE-led coalition forces, 3 by the Joint Forces on the Western Coast, and 1 victim by non-state actors. The victims were spread across several governorates, with the highest numbers recorded in Al-Dhale' (68 victims), followed by Taiz (57 victims), Amanat Al-Asimah (53 victims), Aden (51 victims), Hadhramaut (49 victims), Marib (38 victims), Hajjah (30 victims), Lahj (22 victims), Al-Bayda (20 victims), Al-Hodeidah (17 victims), Shabwa (16 victims), Amran (10 victims), Ibb (9 victims), Al-Mahra (7 victims), Abyan (6 victims), Dhamar (6 victims), Al-Mahwit (5 victims), the Saudi border region (3 victims), Saada (2 victims), Al-Jawf (1 victim), Raymah (1 victim), and Sana’a (1 victim).

In July alone, Mwatana for Human Rights documented 100 new incidents of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and torture. Ansar Allah (Houthi) group were responsible for 50 of these incidents, the internationally recognized government forces for 31, the Southern Transitional Council forces for 15, and the Saudi/UAE-led coalition for 4 incidents.

It is noteworthy that Mwatana for Human Rights provides legal support through a network of lawyers across Yemen to victims of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and torture by various parties. The organization works alongside or on behalf of the victims' families, meticulously documenting all relevant information about the victims and incidents based on informed consent of the victims or their families.

The legal support team at Mwatana focuses on ensuring procedural justice for all individuals who come into contact with law enforcement agencies or who are detained by armed groups that have become de facto authorities. The goal is to guarantee that these individuals enjoy all their rights from the moment of detention, through interrogation and defense, including the conditions and location of their detention, and culminating in their trial.
