Mwatana Calls for an Investigation into the Circumstances of the Death and Accountability for Those Responsible
Mwatana for Human Rights has called on the Attorney General in Sana’a to launch a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of detainee Ahmed Baalawi, an employee of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), while in the custody of the Ansar Allah (Houthi) group authorities. Mwatana emphasized that the repeated deaths of detainees in illegal detention facilities necessitate a responsible response, including investigations into these incidents, justice for the victims, and measures to prevent arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance in all circumstances.
Mwatana stated that this tragedy once again underscores the gravity of arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance, which continue to be widespread violations of the constitution and the law. It also highlights the devastating impact of these violations on victims, their families, colleagues, and society as a whole.
While extending its condolences to the family of the late humanitarian worker Ahmed Baalawi, as well as to WFP staff, the United Nations, and the broader humanitarian community in Yemen, Mwatana reiterates its call for the release of all detainees held by the Ansar Allah (Houthi) group, including UN employees, NGO workers, civil society members, and diplomatic mission staff. The organization also renews its demand for the release of all individuals detained outside the framework of the law by all parties to the conflict.
