Mwatana Provides Legal Support to 821 Victims of Arbitrary Detention, Enforced Disappearance, and Torture

Mwatana for Human Rights stated that it, through its field lawyers, offered legal support to 821 victims of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and torture, resulting in the release of 320 of them in 2023.

Radhya Al-Mutawakel, Chairperson of Mwatana for Human Rights, mentioned that the organization [Mwatana] provided legal assistance through its field lawyers to civilian victims throughout 2023. This included support for 404 victims detained by the Ansar Allah (Houthi) group, 170 victims detained by the Southern Transitional Council, 202 victims detained by the Internationally Recognized Government forces, 36 victims detained by the Saudi/UAE-led coalition forces, and 6 victims detained by the Joint Forces operating in the western coast. Mwatana also documented 3 cases of arbitrary detention by other actors.

It's worth noting that Mwatana offers legal assistance through a network of lawyers operating across various regions of Yemen to victims of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and torture inflicted by different parties. Mwatana works closely with victims' families, or acts on their behalf, after meticulously documenting victim and incident specifics and obtaining informed consent from victims or their families.

The legal support team at Mwatana for Human Rights is dedicated to ensuring procedural justice for individuals who interact with law enforcement agencies or are detained by armed groups that function as de facto authorities. Their efforts are aimed at ensuring that victims have access to their rights, starting from the moment of detention, through the stages of interrogation and defense, including the location and conditions of detention, and culminating in the trial process.
